A Black Bike

A commenter on Sigrid's blog My Hyggelig, brings us this encouraging discovery, a 'dutch' bicycle distributor in New York City: A Black Bike

Their web site says they carry bicycles "built by Holland's best bicycle builder using top quality materials and fitted with the latest technology in gears, brakes and accessories." So that would suggest Azor, Gazelle or Koga Miyata are supplying the frames? And the gears would be in-hub (Shimano or Sturmey-Archer?)

However the bicycle pictured appears to be single speed and have only coaster brakes. The web site is registered to someone in the 11205 zip, which is around Fort Green or South Williamsburg. I'm looking forward to learning more... Have any more info? Post in the comments, please.

Looks a lot like Chinese Flying Pigeon with a front rack to me.

I actually don't think it is a pigeon - it's missing lots of the tell-tale pigeon tracks...

okay, it's me. i admit it. it's a frail attempt to sabotage the dutch bike industry, creating room for increase of exports from denmark.

buy two!

There's a phone number on their site, but no address. Anybody willing to call for the sake of research?

Krista - make the call - report about it! I'll post your report.

Henry from WorkCycles here... The bike's not from us or Azor, though (from the low-res image) it appears to have some of our parts and possibly our frame mixed with other stuff. Its absolutely not a Gazelle or Koga, nor Batavus or Sparta. That's pretty much it for firms who could reasonably claim to be "Holland's best bicycle builder".

My guess is that the images are not of the bikes they'll actually be selling. Perhaps generic photos of black, Dutch bikes were used to get the initial site up.

We handle the North American distribution for Azor and I've never heard from A Black Bike though its vaguely possible somebody could be buying in Holland and shipping to the US independently. Or maybe they plan to contact us later ;-)

In any case we'd be very interested in having a good dealer in NY, particularly Brooklyn... my hometown!
