New York Mayor: I'd Ban Bikes on Subway

New York Post reports:
"I don't run the subway system, I don't run the MTA, but if I did - if I had total power - I guess I'd say it's too crowded for bikes," the mayor said."
And this is what we call a "bike friendly" administration?

i've lived in nyc for 30 years - and this is by far the most 'bike friendly' administration i have experienced - well let me restate that - this is the 'only' bike friendly administration i have experienced - change is slow - and the mayor is an exceedingly smart man - and more important than that he is one of the few politicians (maybe because he is not a politician) to have the courage to comfortably change his mind about issues once informed - my guess is that he is already working with a bike advocacy group - but if he is not that he would - and as more and more people take to bikes - and they will - as mass transit usage continues to increase because of gas prices - and subways and busses get more and more crowded - and more people take to bikes to avoid the crowds and have more freedom - i bet that he would be open to an initiative that would better integrate bikes into the mass transit system - perhaps by designating certain stations and train cars as 'bike friendly' - a system that would link the bikeways and bike lanes with the subway - with specified stations and turnstiles for bikes - and specified train cars - like the last car for instance - so take the 6 train for example - someone could enter at 96th street or 68th street but not 86th or 77th or 59th streets - and exit at specified stations downtown that are the closest to the bike lanes - and the same for all other lines - he probably has a point that the subways are too crowded for bikes - without a solid plan for accommodating bikes that would be good for both cyclists and subway riders - i bet he would be open to the idea - i'm going to develop a prototype plan using the 6 train and the nyc bike map and send it to him - will keep you posted

LOL... these defenses of the Lord Autocrat Bloomberg are nothing if not amusing to me. : ) You are talking about someone who has discussed changing term limits so he can stay in office - and that's just the beginning...

Perhaps instead of giving huge subsidies to developers (like Trump) and by starting to charge them for the massive strain their luxury developments make on public services - we could direct that money to infrastructure like subways that can accommodate bikes, affordable housing, green space, etc?

But we might want to start with a subway system that isn't falling apart..

And don't you think he's not a very good problem solver if he says "well the subway is too crowded." So, if the problem is crowding, why don't we fix that, rather than start banning types of users?

Why don't we ban large people from the subway? They take up too much room, after all...

You say change is slow, but change isn't slow - change happens overnight if the administration decides to make it a priority - there's evidence of that all over the city. It's just a question of priorities, aka politics - and my politics and Bloomberg's politics, don't line up on much.

michael what I find to be amusing are the bloomberg sucksbloomberg sucks bloomberg sucks rants - with zero regard to what it takes to run a city like new york - to make change - you probably claim to be a 'liberal' but as far as i can tell you are anything but i 'liberal' - you seem very closed minded - with no interest in discussing anything other than what 'you' think should happen - that is not a 'liberal' - we all get the anti-bloomberg thing - but you are so misguided about how to get things done - for you it is more about 'rants' than 'ideas' - clearly unwilling to discuss any ideas that 'differ' from you own - a 'liberal' - i think not

Liberals are the folks who want to tax the rich, until they become rich themselves.

Liberals are the folks who hate the war and drive an SUV.

Liberals are the Clinton supporters who claim that she really didn't mean to vote for the war in Iraq.

: ) I would never claim to be a liberal.

Here's a little ditty from our friend Phil that you might remember... a song about "Liberals".

"I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I'm glad the commies were thrown out
of the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
as long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I read New republic and Nation
I've learned to take every view
You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I'm almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There's no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I vote for the democratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I'll send all the money you ask for
But don't ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal"

well michael you seem to have a good perspective on 'liberal' - and i'm sure you are voting for obama - as i am - and probably as the derided mayor mike is - but just wait til right after he gets elected - when the israeli lobby (as they should) and the generals sit down with him - then let's see how quickly we exit iraq - this asshole president we have created a situation that is next to impossible to get out of
