New Poll: Name My Bicycle!

After a name is selected, I'm going to lay out the font and have it printed for my Velorbis Churchill Classic rear plate. In the meantime, I've removed all the letters in Velorbis other than "O" and "R". Imagine the name here on this shiny black plate - maybe in sky blue...

Velorbis or...?

The poll is in the sidebar - check it out and don't forget to vote! And if you have a better suggestion, post it in the comments and it might just wind up on my bicycle.

The poll includes all the names suggested by readers in the original naming post or given to me in person. Here are the descriptions of each one and the reader who came up with it.

Steven
"Unexpected and unpretentious." -Sigrid

The Bronck
"Jonas Bronck, the Dane for whom the Bronx is named." -Zakka

Vegan-orbis
"...every Vegan's favorite Velorbis" -Gregory

Cigarface
"Churchill's nickname." -Alex

Sleipnir
"The name of Odin's eight legged steed. Sleipnir carries Odin between the world of the Gods and the world of matter. The eight legs symbolize Sleipnir's ability to travel through land and air." Proposed by Liz.

Jackie D
"...of course his full given name would be Jack Daniels - and of course he would deserve a proper christening someplace along the Brooklyn waterfront - probably near the QM2 dock to make Winston proud of his namesake" -William

Winston
"...of course 'Winston' is another highly suitable name" -William

Pete
"My bike's name is Jeffrey. And yours totally looks like a "Pete". - Amanda

Almafuerte
"my nickname could be good, it means strong soul in spanish. And it was the nickname of a very important poet here in Argentina." -Josè Marìa

Other
None of the above? Post your own suggestions in the comments.

And please, choose wisely...

I never was able to afford a Velorbis, ended up with a Schwinn.

Hold on to that baby! A Velorbis in Brooklyn will probably be very tempting to a thief!

Hey Old Man & Dog: lol, yes... that would be why I have a new renters insurance personal property policy... Oh, and there's a microchip implanted in the bike so it can be tracked. If anyone is stupid enough to steal it, the police will come knocking at their door. ; )

michael - more about the microchip - is that standard issue for churchill? - mine arrived on saturday - frame too large - swapping it on tuesday - awesome awesome bike though

Hi William - What's your height and inseam?

Yes, there is an anti-theft microchip in everything I own. Just the knowledge of this deters all would-be thieves.

michael - where does one get an anti-theft microchip? - i'm 5-11 - dan thought the 58 frame would be right for me - but can't straddle it comfortably - switching it for a 55 frame - my inseam is 30 i think - although not exactly sure what the measurement is

Since Velorbis is a combination of Velo and Orbis, how about "organ" as in Orbis and Vegan..?

Michael said...

Chickenside - LOL, that's great.... Anyone have any votes for Organ - vote in the comments! : )

My Velorbis just arrived..! It wasn't supposed to get here until Wed, so my weekend plans have changed from house-work to bike-play. Feeling very much like Christmas here. I'll comment about my weekend with Lord Baltimore-- it's new name, though my girlfriend has been calling it "the Bentley."

Chickenside:

The Bentley is a great nickname for Lord Baltimore... wow.

congrats chickenside on your new bike - mine arrives on tuesday and can't wait - love the name lord baltimore and the bently - the quality of those bikes is amazing - although i'm thinking it is going to feel somewhat obscene riding a $2000 bike past the poor and homeless when i could have been more 'green' and 'socially responsible' and gotten a recycled schwinn instead - but working through that with my therapist :)

It's pretty socially responsible to invest in a bicycle instead of a car - especially if you take care of it and pass it on for generations. : )

thanks michael - good way to look at it - and i did get rid of my car 6 months ago which i rarely drove that cost me $700/month with parking and insurance - my ex was pissed because it took away his shuttle to the pines for him and his friends - i'll suggest to him that they all get churchills :) - the one downside to not having a car is i have a dog - a big dog - yellow lab - and it was great being able to drive him to the beach or upstate for runs etc - but didn't happen enough to make it worth the 700/month expense - so sold the car and joined zipcar which is awesome and i recommend to everyone - no hertz lines - and they are all over manhattan - not sure about brooklyn though - my dream is to teach him to run next to me on the bike - he is very strong and love squirrels - so not sure if that is going to work - but i am going to give it the old college try :) - by the way i got the lock you recommended and i am ready to start commuting to chelsea from the upper east side on wednesday morning - also got some great saddlebags from dan - i'm a little disappointed in the ride the city website - i think it is an awesome resource - and there is probably no way to correct it (without great expense) to make it better - for instance from where i live in the 90s on the east side the 'safest' route is to ride through the park to columbus circle and then down broadway to 22nd street - riding down broadway i don't consider the 'safest' way to go - my plan is to ride across to the bikeway along the hudson and then down to 22nd street and then over to 6th - nevertheless the website is a great resource and frankly it is awesome that it even exists - since you are the new york city churchill guy how about your organizing a new york city 'churchill ride'?

Michael said...

William - Send the Ride the City crew your feedback - they're really receptive!

awesome - thanks michael - and if nothing changes i will blame it on bloomberg ;)

Lord Baltimore and I have been getting on quite well this weekend-- raise the seat-post here, adjust the handlebars there, tighten the front brakes, get comfortable with the internal hub shifting, bungie the wine crate to the rack, and off to the grocery for prosecco and beer for a neighborhood fish fry on a warm and moist Saturday evening in Louisiana. Last night I gave "the Bentley" a little wax job to combat the ever increasing amount of eye-prints with which my neighbors have been assaulting it.

I only have a few photos so far-- wasn't able to completely abandon the house-work for bike-play.

Here's what I have so far, starting with the delivery.
